Monday:

Monday has been a strong day for the past couple of seasons with Dancing dominating the night and Castle, at least in the spring, dominating the 10 p.m. hour. So stick with the notion “if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it” right? Have to disagree there.

Dancing has become ABC’s top performing show in terms of demos and total viewers (old viewers mind you). The 10 p.m. spot following DWTS is a prime spot for ABC to launch a new series. ABC launched Castle three seasons ago during mid season and it has grown very nicely over the past couple of seasons. Castle is increasingly holding a larger percentage of DWTS’s lead-in, showing that the show is becoming more popular with DWTS fans. But with Castle entering its 4th season in fall 2011, isn’t it time for ABC to try something new at 10 p.m.? I believe so. It is a missed opportunity on ABC’s part to get a new show ample sampling. Castle has had three seasons to establish itself, and I believe that Castle can stand on its own on a different night.

Prediction: ABC should contend for the top-rated network for the night. The ratings for DWTs depends largely on who the “stars” are. But nonetheless, DWTS will be a force. Castle gets good ratings, but that largely depends on its lead-in. Castle should be the top-rated show for the hour.

DWTS- 4.5
CASTLE- 3.1

Tuesday:

The 8 p.m. hour of ABC has been a trouble spot. Previous occupant No Ordinary Family started off well, but soon dipped into cancellation. ABC had to resort to running a reality show that also did poorly. So ABC had to resort to airing a recap show of DWTS, which did much better than the previous two occupants. So what does ABC have in store for the fall?

Comedies. And the person to launch a new comedy block is ABC alum Tim Allen. He had success with Home Improvement for ABC. But is Tim Allen still relevant? Hard to say. He is still fairly well known, and people may tune in out of curiosity.

DWTS will air its results show at 9 p.m. The results show usually rates lower than the performance show, showing that people are more interested in watching these celebrities dance than care who wins.  But it does rate better than most shows ABC has.

Body Of Proof will get the 10 p.m. spot and the DWTS as its prime lead-in. The show has done OK since its premiere in March. Maybe another season behind DWTS will give it a good sampling.

Prediction: ABC has the added benefit of starting a comedy block with no other comedies in contention. And the network has the track record of starting a successful comedy block out of thin air (Modern Family, The Middle). And with the bar set low because of this year’s mess at 8 p.m., I see ABC improving on the night.

LAST MAN STANDING: 2.5
MAN UP: 2.3
DWTS: 3.5
BODY OF PROOF: 2.3

Wednesday:

ABC has done a very nice job launching 2 comedy blocks when no other comedies were on the schedule. ABC has some nice anchors at 8 p.m. (The Middle) and their big hit at 9 p.m. in Modern Family.   But they’ve only had mixed success in the half hour that follow. Cougar Town did ok but squandered much of its lead-in. Mr. Sunshine was an even bigger bust when it took over during mid season. The 8:30 p.m. slot didn’t see any success, with Better With You losing much of its modest lead-in.

The 10 p.m. hour had been a dead zone for ABC in terms of scripted dramas. ABC resorted to airing comedies at 10 p.m., with modest success. Happy Endings did better than it’s drama counterparts, but still low ratings. So it’s very surprising to see ABC put Happy Endings behind Modern Family. The show, it’s safe to say, has many fans inside ABC to get the plum comedy slot behind Family. And it also shows that ABC has more confidence in a 2nd year comedy that one of their new comedy pilots.

ABC will be going back to dramas at 10 p.m.

Prediction: The Middle and Modern Family will provide a nice anchor for their other comedies to take hold. New comedy Suburgatory sounds like a nice fit with ABC “family” comedies. And I don’t hold much hope for Happy Endings, just based on the ratings it was getting at 10 p.m. Yes it’s not a perfect comparison, but the ratings were bad and I don’t see much improvement.

And I don’t hold out much hope for Revenge succeeding. ABC had struck out twice last year, and ABC would have been better served with slotting Castle, an established show, here than a new show. A new drama would be better suited behind DWTS.

THE MIDDLE: 2.6
SUBURGATORY: 2.3
MODERN FAMILY: 4.3
HAPPY ENDINGS: 2.0
REVENGE: 1.8

Thursday:

Every time I here Charlie’s Angels I keep hearing Destiny’s Child.  And the new reboot of CA will have to lead off the night on Thursdays. Not only that, it will have to go up against X Factor in the fall and American Idol during the spring. Not to mention The Big Bang Theory on CBS. Will it be able to establish a foothold? It has the name recognition and it is one of the more high-profile pilots out there.

Grey’s Anatomy stays put at 9 p.m. The show has been deteriorating in the ratings for some time now to the point ABC has got to be worried. Just like FOX Mondays, ABC maybe trying to prop up its veteran show to lessen the slow bleed of viewers.

The 10 p.m. hour belongs to Private Practice, which has done respectable numbers. While the show does OK, it does squander some of GA’s audience. When PP aired on another night without the GA support, it was getting cancel-worthy ratings, so the only thing holding up the show at this point, IMO, is the lead-in from GA.

Prediction: Charlie’s Angels will get some good initial viewing. It has the appeal for women, which helps out the rest of the night. I see Angels becoming a modest hit for ABC. Grey’s will get a bump with better lead-in support, and possible Private Practice.

CHARLIE’S ANGELS: 3.0
GREY’S ANATOMY: 3.8
PRIVATE PRACTICE: 2.7

Friday:

The only interesting thing here is Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. The show had been slowly bleeding viewers over the years. ABC wanted to try something new on Sundays 8 p.m. to see if they can reinvigorate that night (the whole night had been lagging). Shifting Extreme Makeover to Fridays is a low-risk move on ABC’s part. The rest of the night is populated with fellow reality show Shark Tank and newsmagazine 20/20.

Prediction: Extreme Makeover was averaging in the low 2’s. The show will no doubt lose some viewers. Shark Tank has never rated that high so its ratings will be low.

EXTREME MAKEOVER: 1.8
SHARK TANK: 1.4
20/20: 1.4

Sunday:

Sundays used to be one of ABC’s strongest nights, anchored by Desperate Housewives. But that show has lost a good amount of viewers, along with Brothers & Sisters (now canceled) and Extreme Makeover. So ABC will try something new in airing scripted content at 8 p.m. and a brand new show at 10 p.m.

ABC is taking a bit of a gamble by airing 3 hours of scripted content on Sundays. The night has not launched a successful drama for quite some time. The dominance of Housewives is slowly coming to an end, and ABC will need to find a replacement for this show in the near future (like Grey’s Anatomy). ABC will try to launch a fairy-tale themed drama Once Upon A Time at 8 p.m. and a period piece Pan Am. Both shows are huge risks since they are in genres that do not have widespread appeal. These shows could change that mold, but it will be difficult.

Prediction: More erosion to Housewives can be expected. Many critics as well as fans have been complaining about the quality of the show. And by reading comments of fans and critics online, it seems like they’ve been running out of storylines. Once Upon A Time and Pan Am will do respectable numbers, but I expect them to be on the bubble come next season.

ONCE UPON A TIME: 2.3
DESPARATE HOUSEWIVES: 3.3
PAN AM: 2.5

Analysis:

*The problem with FOX in the fall is that they have baseball playoffs, so their schedule is going to get screwed up once playoffs start.*

Monday:

Yeah, when Chuck had to suffer for years going up against House, they finally moved when NBC moved Chuck. !@##@!#$&^%

Now that’s out, it is a little surprising that FOX will be moving House to the 9 p.m. hour and slot new dino-drama Terra Nova to open the night. Looks like Fox feels that the show has enough appeal to families and buzz (Steven Spielberg and dinosaurs) to start off the night. Is it a bit of a risk? Yes, but it could also be a shrewd move. If Terra Nova does well, that will help out House, which has been dropping in the ratings the past couple of seasons.

Weird thing is that FOX will move House back to 8 p.m. during the spring to act as a lead-in to a new serialized drama Alcatraz. I guess it shows you that FOX is more worried about Alcatraz succeeding.

Prediction:

Terra Nova will get a big sampling because of the pedigree behind the show (Spielberg) and dinosaurs. House should do a little bit better at the 9 p.m. hour where the show is more suited anyway. But will the slow erosion continue next season?

TERRA NOVA: 3.0
 HOUSE: 3.5

Tuesday:

FOX will once again try to establish a comedy block following Glee. FOX did not have much success in launching comedies, with only mediocre-rated Raising Hope returning. Glee has seen its ratings drop a tiny bit compared to the fall. Are people getting tired of the show? I don’t think so. Glee is still one of the more higher rated shows on FOX, and the show is a cash cow for the network (music downloads on Itunes). FOX is taking another stab with comedies by airing New Girl, starring Zooey Deschanel. This is one of FOX’s more buzzed about pilots, so the network has high hopes for this single-cam comedy.

Prediction:

Glee will anchor the night at 8 p.m. and should do well in the fall when more people are watching TV. The problem is that the show has not been a good launching pad for comedies, if last year was any indication. Will New Girls be more mainstream? We’ll see. Raising Hope is a more mainstream show, but that didn’t do gangbusters in the ratings.

GLEE: 3.8
NEW GIRL: 2.5
RAISING HOPE: 2.0

Wednesday:

Simon Cowell being an a-hole? Check. Will people tune in to see him act like an ass? Check. FOX finally brings The X Factor to its schedule. Not a big fan of reality taking up this much space on a network. But it does plug holes into their lineup.

FOX will use X Factor to launch another comedy, I Hate My Teenage Daughter, a multi-cam comedy. This is another much buzzed about pilot. FOX has never had success in the multi-cam genre (or single cam mind you) so this is FOX’s attempt to establish comedies in their lineup.

Predictions:

The X Factor will no doubt be a huge hit for FOX, but how big of a hit? I doubt it will be big as Idol but it will be huge nonetheless. The bigger question is the comedy following X Factor. It will lose most of the lead-in, but Daughter should rate respectably. It will have to stand on its own without lead-in support to see if it is indeed a big hit.

THE X FACTOR: 6.0
I HATE MY TEENAGE DAUGHTER: 2.8

Thursday:

Following the Idol format, The X Factor will air its second night on Thursday 8 p.m. The schedule for Thursday will remain the same as it was in the spring, with Bones and its spinoff The Finder airing in this slot. FOX strengthen their Thursday schedule in the spring, and it has worked out for them. It will be interesting to see how The Finder does when Bones goes on hiatus to accommodate Emily Deschanel’s pregnancy.

That said, I wished FOX would use the 9 p.m. slot to launch a new drama, such as Terra Nova to give it the best chances of succeeding. Bones is entering its 7th season and it has shown in the past it can stand on its own.

Prediction: FOX will be mostly stable for the night, with The X Factor anchoring the night. Expect monster ratings too on this night. Bones will do Bones ratings, but The Finder will be a toss-up. Will Bones fans flock to the new show? I say yes, as many fans were happy with the backdoor pilot that aired several weeks ago.

THE X FACTOR: 5.5
BONES: 3.2
THE FINDER (mid season): 2.8

Friday:

Angry chefs and alternate realities. FOX is keeping their spring Friday schedule intact. It has done OK for them, though Fringe has dropped to a level where FOX has to be a tiny bit worried about. It squanders its lead-in, though these two shows are incompatible. Kitchen Nightmares is a reality show and it does reasonably well on a Friday.

Prediction: Expect roughly the same ratings it was getting in spring for both shows. Maybe see a tiny uptick since it will be the fall.

KITCHEN NIGHTMARES: 1.7
FRINGE: 1.4

NBC 2011-2012 Fall Schedule- An Analysis

I will be doing an analysis of each network’s prospective fall schedules for the 2011-2012 Fall TV Season. NBC will be the most in-depth since I’m partial to NBC. Most of my favorite shows have been on this network. I’ve also been following it the longest.

Analysis

Monday:

NBC will have a whole new Monday. NBC, for the past two seasons, has floundered big on this night. In fact, it is one of their weakest nights, including Fridays. NBC is looking to stabilize the night with reality and a new period drama.

The biggest surprise is NBC extending The Sing Off to 2 hours. The past two seasons it aired 6 episodes over a 2-week span in December. It was used more of a holiday filler. However, when it returned for its second season the show did respectable numbers, averaging a 2.5 in the 18-49 demo. In its current form, I don’t see how the show sustains that, so we’ll probably see some minor tweaks (more groups to perform?) to the show.

Following The Sing Off, the 10 p.m. hour will belong to bunnies. No, not furry, cuddly ones, but scantily clad Playboy Bunnies. The Playboy Club is a period piece in the mold of Mad Men. Mad Men, for all its awards and praise among TV critics, has never been a huge hit for AMC. In fact, it was nearly canceled after its first season. So NBC (and ABC w/ its similar period piece Pan Am) will be taking quite the risk with this type of show. People will no doubt be very interested in this show based on name recognition alone.

Prediction (w/ demos): NBC should be able to improve on the night as a whole. While The Sing Off aired against weak competition, it also aired when people were tuning out of TV since it was the end of the fall TV season (and holidays as well). The Playboy Club will have strong initial interest. How it will do after that is anyone’s guess.

The Sing-Off: 2.3
THE PLAYBOY CLUB: 2.5

Tuesday:

No need to break up something that is working, right? It has been one of NBC’s more stable and highest rated night. While I do agree with that premise, I do have some minor beef with this lineup.

The Biggest Loser is still at two hours long. The show has been waning in the ratings the past couple of years, yet it is still one of NBC’s better performing shows. So I can see why NBC would leave the show as is. Also, it does much better in the fall than spring.

Parenthood stays on at 10 p.m. This is my minor gripe. While Parenthood has done OK in this slot, it squanders most of its lead-in. The show will be entering its 3rd season come fall. By this time it should have been able to hold its own. The season finale saw a nice jump to 2.5, but it was averaging close to 2.0 the rest of the season. NBC would have been better off airing a new show in this slot to give it the best sampling (i.e Prime Suspect) or a show that needs help in the young demo (Harry’s Law).

Prediction: We will see neither notable increases nor decreases in ratings. Both shows should be able to slightly increase their ratings compared to what it was getting during spring. Other than that, NBC is set for this night.

The Biggest Loser: 2.5
Parenthood: 2.1

Wednesday:

Last season NBC completely gave up on the 8 and 9 p.m. hours after various shows failed. Undercovers and Law & Oder: Los Angeles failed to attract an audience. Minute to Win It was a half-assed attempt to save the night. In the spring, NBC had to resort to airing repeats at 9 p.m. For a major network, that is plain embarrassing and show you how dreadful it was for NBC this year.

Another big gamble NBC is taking is launching a new comedy block to start off the night. This new comedy block will have some major headwinds to endure as it will go up against ABC’s comedy block and the arrival of Fox’s The X Factor. Up All Night (Christina Applegate, Will Arnett) and Free Agents (Hank Azaria) have name recognition, but will have the tough (but not impossible) task of establishing a beachhead for another comedy block. Both shows have fairly well-known actors.

Harry’s Law will move to its new slot at 9 p.m. The show was a self starter, debuting pretty well with 12 million viewers but a very low 2.3 demo. That is one very old skew. It dropped for its finale to 8 million and a 1.4 demo. However, the show should do better at this slot, with its competition mainly from similar genre show Criminal Minds. The show should pair well with Law & Order: SVU, who stays in its original spot at 10 p.m.

Prediction: NBC will no doubt do better than the 1.0 Minute was getting in the 8-10 p.m. hours. It will improve, but will it be something NBC is happy or content with? We’ll know in the fall.

UP ALL NIGHT: 2.0
FREE AGENTS :1.8
Harry’s Law: 1.8)
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: 2.6

Thursday:

Thursday 8-10 p.m. has been a comedy staple for NBC for quite some time. This spring, they tried airing comedies at the 10 p.m. hour. While it didn’t do too badly, it was hardly a success, even by NBC standards. So I’m happy NBC is doing away with the 10 p.m. comedy block.

Community stays in its 8 p.m. slot, followed by Parks and Recreation. While both shows are lowly rated, they do have a loyal fan base, and they do provide a baseline in which the network can build. Going up against Idol and soon to debut X Factor, it has held its own rather well. Parks should provide a better 8:30 p.m. show than its two predecessors, two shows that were canceled in the same season.

It will be interesting to see how The Office does without Steve Carrell. My guess is that they will find a high-profile name to replace him. A new show will follow The Office, which will be NBC’s foray back to the multi-cam comedies that made the network so successful in the past. Whitney will have the plum spot after The Office, though on paper these two shows are totally different.

The 10 p.m. hour is NBC’s return to drama. Prime Suspect, a remake of the British version with the same name and starred Helen Mirren, will have the tough task of restoring NBC’s honor at this hour. This hour was long a prime spot for dramas such as ER. How the show will do is anyone’s guess. The show is mostly character-driven (a la House) so appeal of the show will hinge on the lead, Maria Bello.

Prediction: The Office will no doubt see a drop, but how much is a key question. The 8 p.m. hour should do OK by NBC’s standards, but they cannot drop much. Whitney is supposedly a more mainstream comedy, but it will probably rate modestly. Prime Suspect will get a good sampling, but will probably skew old.

Community: 1.9
Parks and Recreation: 2.0
The Office: 3.5
WHITNEY: 2.8
PRIME SUSPECT: 2.5

Fridays:

Ah Fridays, where shows go to die. I never liked how the networks dumped all their low-rated shows to Fridays for a slow death. However, it’s been nice to see the networks try to make Fridays relevant again (we’re waiting ABC). It was these same networks that made this night a wasteland in the first place. So it’s refreshing to see NBC air two hours of scripted shows on Fridays.

Chuck. One of my favorite shows of all time and NBC was amazing and classy enough to give the show a proper send off with a final 13 episode order. And of course, WB wanting more episodes for syndication didn’t hurt either. Chuck will be entering its final season, so that should help get back some fans it lost the last 4 years. Since Chuck has a very dedicated base, it serves as a nice baseline where a show can grow out of.

Which brings us to Grimm. On paper, this show could pair well with Chuck since both seem to be geek-friendly. A supernatural cop show could be intriguing, but the past has shown that Sci Fi TV shows have had a hard time becoming mainstream hits. NBC could very well be dumping their “least worthy” pilot to Fridays, but NBC did pick up this pilot for a reason, so they do see some upside in this show, especially paired with Chuck.

10 p.m. will be Dateline. Nothing new here.

Prediction: It will be key for Chuck to keep its viewers from Monday. Most shows will lose viewers once move to Friday, but Chuck has the benefit of starting the season on Friday. Also helping it will be the notion this will be the final season. But ratings for Chuck are a moot point. It will be a bigger issue for the show that follows it. If Grimm can grow out of Chuck, it has some potential.

Chuck: 1.2
GRIMM: 1.4
Dateline NBC: 1.3

Mid Season:

NBC is looking to make a big push during mid season. The reason? They have the Golden Globes, NFL playoffs, and a little sporting event called the Super Bowl. This assuming football is even played this season.

For mid season NBC is holding back its biggest show, The Voice, and its most buzzed about pilot, the Steven Spielberg-created musical Smash. Both shows will take over Mondays in the spring.

NBC also has shows in reserve, the Inception-style Awake, and comedies Are You There Vodka? Its Me Chelsea, Bent, and BFF.
